Photographic experimentation

I have an interest in experimentation and abstraction. I use both digital and traditional methods, including  home-made and large-format equipment taking pictures on film or paper. I often use unusual lighting and constructed scenes.

My work  includes lens-less photography, optical distortion, reflections in found surfaces, architecture, macro photography of everyday items, and the  results of combining multiple images to explore depth of focus, dynamic  range and spatial extension. I often find myself building or modifying  cameras to achieve particular effects, and reach a little further than I otherwise could.

Interests include:
- Architectural photography
- Large format (up to 12"x10" negatives)
- Wide-angle, panoramic and fisheye images
- Multiple images and Gigapan photography
- Macro and microscope photography
- Extreme depth of field
- Pinhole images
- Outdoor and studio photography with infra-red light
- Unusual lighting techniques
- Time-lapse sequences

... and in general, I enjoy building special and one-off cameras and other gear in order to get results that can't be achieved in more  conventional ways.

Acrylic Paint + Liquid Emulsion

As well as photography, I also find time for some painting. In fact, a mixture of the two turned out to be a powerful source of inspiration. In 2005-06 I concentrated on a series of acrylic paintings on canvas with a monochrome photographic emulsion coated and exposed on the surface. This series was shown at the East Devon Open Art Exhibition in Honiton in summer 2005, and at Indigo Restaurant, Coombe Street, Lyme Regis, during ArtsFest, 1 - 9 October 2005. Here are some examples, all 60 x 60 cm canvases with multiple layers of painted and photographic imagery:
